Gum Granulomas
Boxers and mastiffs are prone to the formation of growths on the gums around
teeth that are in need of de-scaling and polishing. These growths are not
tumours but granulomas, new tissue growth that tries to grow round the
tartar on the teeth as if to enclose it. It fails of course, and results in a
deterioration of the health of the teeth and gums. Some times the teeth are
almost completely hidden by the granulomas. Bacteria love to grow in the many
recesses and pockets that are formed around the teeth. Cases that are caught
early enough can be treated effectively. Under general anaesthetic we cut away
the excess gum tissue, de-scale and polish the teeth and the mouth can return to
normal. Regrowth of granulomas can be expected over the next year or two but can
be treated routinely at the same time as annual dental polishing. ~
