Oscar - Boxer
Facial reconstruction
to correct chronic infection of facial folds
Oscar is a lovely calm boxer. He is muscular and slim and looks great for 10 years old.
But in the summer of 2007 he had deep facial skin folds that had gradually became infected and swollen. Basically he had too much skin about his face. He suffered severe bacterial infection in these folds and even the strongest medication could only just give him relief in the summer when the infection was at it's worst.
In late November '07 when the inflammation had settled down a little we decided to surgically remove the excess skin from his face so that next summer he would not need so much medication.
By taking away the skin folds we take away the moist crevices that encourage microbial infection.

1 week post op. Oscar is comfortable                2 weeks post op. healing well, staples removed

2 weeks post op. healing well.                           3 weeks post op.  Folds removed successfully

Oscar has had no skin infections since the operation in Nov.'07. The real test is how he copes with warm summer weather. However, now the facial folds are gone the skin can be kept clean and dry and any treatment required can be applied easily.
Oscar has been a wonderful patient throughout his treatment. We have interfered with his face, poking, cleaning, removing staples etc. and he hasn't growled or grumbled at anytime!  He deserves a medal!

June 2008  The weather is hot! This time last year Oscar was having serious trouble with facial skin infections.
This summer Oscar is doing fine. He has not been on medication since Jan '08 and the remaining small skin folds are clean and comfortable with no signs of inflammation or irritation. His owner just keeps the folds clean by cleaning them daily.
